A little away…

13 Apr 2004 - Under General By Mandrake

Took a little trip over the weekend up to Kuala Lumpur for a little R&R with some friends. Anyway, KL to me, has always more night life than Singapore has. Their clubs are more happening, and the food is great too. If you think Singapore has good food, KL has more to offer, if you know where to find it.

Anyway, I was there to meet up with some friends that had returned from their studies overseas. On the saturday night, we decided to go to the newly open Zouk Malaysia, the sister club of Zouk Singapore, one of the oldest clubs in Singapore. When we reached there at around 9pm (very early to reach a club in KL), there was already a long long queue at the enterance. Apparently, there was this number one DJ who is spinning there that night, hence the crowd. I was checking out the crowd and noticed that there was quite a lot of people under the age of 20. I think some are even in their 16 or 17. This puts us off a bit.

The legal drinking age in Singapore and Malaysia is 18 years of age, much lower than the US, which is 21. I was told that the clubs over there paid off quite a bit of money to the local police senior inspectators to prevent them from raiding the place. Most of the time, the police will only raid the establishment only if there was a fight. Other than that, they would close an eye to the illegal drinking problem. I was told they are paid close to USD 20000 a month.

Anyway, we went off to another club nearby. My friend negotiated for a sofa seat with the guy at the door but when we went in, the head waiter inside didn’t want us to have it. We left immediately and went to its neighbour.

All this happened around 11pm, which is still too early for the people to start clubbing. I think I can count about 30 odd people in the club, including us. Luckily for us, we managed to fight off the boredom by playing the usual drinking game. The crowd only came in around 12am and by then, it was fully packed. All in all, it was a good trip as I managed to meet up with some friends whom I had not seen for a while since I came back.

Now for the interesting part…
One of the friends whom I met, Ooi, I got to know him and his girlfriend while I was studying. We lived quite close to one another and played soccer in the evening, but I don’t know much about his family. That night, he was there with his girlfriend and I was glad to see them again. However, he also brought another girl along.

Now, thats a fine lady whom I was introduced to and I was kind of attracted to her immediately.

Ooi: Hey, let me introduce you to my sister.
Strike 1
Me: *darn*.. Hi, nice to meet you. *eyes straight and up*.. blah blah blah…

And then we went into the club…

While we were playing drinking games, I managed to talk to her..
Me: So how old are you? *Don’t ask me why I asked this question*
She: I’m 19.
Strike 2
Me: Oh mine, you look 23! *which was a compliment*…
blah blah blah..

And towards the end of the night…
Me: Hey, where did your sister went?
Ooi: Oh, she went to get her boyfriend.
Strike 3
Me: Ahh.. I see..

Anyway, it was a good night out overall, apart from the strike out.
I do have some reservation of dating a friend’s sister, although its alright if I really want to go for it. But then the age gap between her and me is too big for now. I think if she is like 23 and I am exactly the number of years older, it should be alright. Oh, I don’t really want long distance relationship. Hence the 3 strikes and more.

But all in all, I don’t mind seeing her again if god willing.. heh heh..

I don’t mind age or anything..the only thing that would keep me is the “friend’s family” thing.. I wouldn’t want to date my friends’ relative..too risky hehe But if you are not too close friends…go for it ;)

Heh.. I would if not for the fact that she is 19.. a bit too young for me.. and also for the distance thing, not too comfortable with that either.
