Know your plane…

18 Jun 2004 - Under General By Mandrake

I am going to fly long distance again soon. Came across sites like this: Seat Guru where they can show you the layout of the plane and recommend which is the better seat. I am getting the one with more shoulder room as I have a broad shoulder, although I hope the flight is not full.

Somehow, I always wish its not a full flight, and thus I can have more rooms to myself. The last few long distance trips I took was alright. The best was still the one where I have 3 seats all to myself. And since it has those monitor-on-the-back-of-seat thingy, I have three.. Out of boredom, I turned on all of them. While the one in front of me would show me the movies and stuff, the right one would show the forward looking camera and the left one shows the downward looking camera. Its cool. You get to see the plane flying into the clouds and then on the downward looking, you get to see what it looks like flying high above. Now, where is the button for the Gatling machine gun?

It sounds like you fit just right into 3 seats. Where are you up to??

Yup, in fact, 4 seats in the middle fits me just nice! My shoulder is so broad that I have to walk sideway to get thru the door..

off to Australia for a little RnR.

yeah seatguru’s really helpful. i consulted it for my latest trip and all the seats i picked were fabulous. anyways, i always go for the aisle seat and the front row is not too bad actually… lots of legroom.

So where did you sat? Nah, I dun want to sit by the aisle.. I have broad shoulder, so the meal carts sometimes bump my shoulder. Although sometimes the stewardess’ not so bad lah.

Those seats right next to the emergency seats are not so bad as well.. leg rooms, but too bad the meal and entertainment system are located at the arm rest.

I always wanna sit in an aisle seat cause I am the annoying one that always wants to get up, get something out of my bag or go to the toilet every 5 mins. I have been trying to no avail to get those seats next to the emergency thing, they have so much space…

Yeah, I know what you mean. I have a friend who wants the aisle seat for the same reason. Well, I think you have to call early to the airline to get those seats. Those are so call “prized seats” in the economy section.

I flew biz class this time!

Should fly first class while you are at it mah.

I took the aisle seats mostly. Suggest you ask whether it’s a full flight or not. Once they close the door, look around for empty rows and ‘chope’. That way you can have the entire row to yourself! Try the first row in the middle for more leg room, athough the movie screen (for some airlines) would be infront of your face. The ones nearest to the emergency exits are very difficult to get and are mainly reserved for the disabled or elderly. Some flights have two seats near the emergency and the row immediately behind is a 3-seater. The one nearest to the window is good cuz there is lots of leg room in front, which takes up the empty space near the emergency exit.

Yeah, will definitely ask them whether its a full flight.. if the seat next to me is not occupied, then good.. coz its a two seater. You know, those two seaters right at the back.. not too near the toilet type.

on your last flight were you flying on Emirates or Gulf Air? One of the arabian airlines have those cameras that shows what’s outside. I think SQ doesn’t.

  17. Mandrake June 22, 2004 10:44 am

Flew Emirates.. which I think is quite a good airline. The seats are nicely spaced out.

  18. evie June 23, 2004 11:18 am

yup meant for fat arabians =p It’s good it’s good. However I like Msian airlines the best. It’s cheap and the food isn’t too bad. $800 to NYC!

  19. Mandrake June 23, 2004 12:40 pm

ehh.. I guess you are right about teh big arabians..
hmm, haven’t taken Malaysian airlines for long distance flight before.

  20. Idler June 23, 2004 4:01 pm

I flew on Malaysian Airlines eons ago, but from what I heard, they like to lose baggage for longhaul flights especially. Maybe it’s their hobby or something.

  21. Mandrake June 23, 2004 4:59 pm

Fortunately, my only baggage with MA was from someone who mistakenly took my baggage.. It was returned the next day when the person returned it.

However, there isn’t any direct flight from Singapore to where I want to go, so have to pass up their offers.
