Keyhole

28 Oct 2004 - Under General By Mandrake

Google just bought http://www.keyhole.com for an undisclosed sum. I saw this in my inbox for CNN Internet’s alert. Well, being curious, I went to take a look..

Basically, Keyhole is a service that generates a map of an area (mostly US for now) using digital aerial photographs. It allows you to pan and tilt and basically do flyby of almost any US area. So right now, I am playing with it, entering my friends’ address and see what kind of area they are staying. Quite cool actually.

When you are viewing the west coast and you entered the east coast address, it literally zoom up into space and then down into the other address.. Not sure why, but its very fun to see this. Makes you feels like Superman.

Right now, they have a 7 days trial and after that, it goes for US30. Not sure whether it would be free after Google buys it but its fun now.

Maybe I do a flyby of New York City later.

New York White House
New York City White house

this is where our friend alf stays..

Click on the pic to see the resolution. Notice the houses next to the White House has censored roof top. Probably don’t want people to know where the Secret Service with the surface-to-air missiles are located. By the way, the White House is the one on the left in the 2nd pic.

Heres what the service does..

Keyhole streams the world over wired and wireless networks enabling users to virtually go anywhere on the planet and see places in photographic detail. This is not like any map you have ever seen. This is a 3D model of the real world, based on real satellite images combined with maps, guides to restaurants, hotels, entertainment, businesses and more. You can zoom from space to street level instantly and then pan or jump from place to place, city to city, even country to country.

Get Keyhole. Put the world in perspective.

The service is almost like http://terraserver.microsoft.com/ but this one is more user friendly and it has colour! Terraserver’s map are mostly grey colours.

I wonder if this keyhole actually makes a terrorist’s life easier??

  15. Mandrake October 28, 2004 3:33 pm

well, I guess it makes the planning easier.. but then the info is in public domain, nothing a little wetwork can’t get.

  16. aMuse October 28, 2004 4:13 pm

it probably IS an elaborate counter-tracking device, track-who’s-tracking-you kinda thing

  17. evie October 28, 2004 5:01 pm

look at what keyhole has zoomed in: Afghanistan - 0.7m, Cuba - 0.7m, Iraq -0.7m

Don’t have other major cities but Afghanistan?! I think they are encouraging americans to become terrorists. Be afraid, be VERY afraid.

Probably these are the only countries that most of the population of US knows.
I mean how many countries does it not have diplomatic relationship with?
How many countries is it having a war with now?

  19. Mrs. Wang October 28, 2004 7:30 pm

HEY HEY HEY HEY! No U.S. bashing! Leave that up to me, only US citizens are allowed to do so. Besides, why do most Americans need to know any other countries? Unless they are providing oil, sending rice, making designer clothing, or manufacturing sports cars, they are as irrelevant as the hair on SD’s arm.

  20. Mandrake October 28, 2004 11:12 pm

Hmm.. seems that only people in US are allowed to access Bush’s website.. People from out of the country gets an access denied page.. sigh..

Don’t insult the hair on SD’s arm by comparing it with George, the hair are better..

By the way, added Alf’s address. Alf is a friend to the tribe.

  21. Likki October 29, 2004 12:08 am

  24. Likki October 29, 2004 2:00 pm
