I shouldn’t have eaten that much..
This is the season of the Ramadan, the muslim’s festival of fasting and cleansing oneself before the new year. The fasting last one month and starts from day break to sunset. Between that, they are not allowed to eat, drink anything, not even smoke. Its to cleanse oneself totally. However, they can eat till silly after that during dinner or in the morning.
Anyway, three of us went to this street called Kandahar Street off Arab Street. There, set up by the roadside are stalls of traditional malay food on sale, however most of them are only available towards the evening.
We went to this coffeeshop called Mien (something) that is right across the mosque and ordered a hell lot of food, and this was for lunch. Between the three of us, we ordered like 11 dishes including eggs, vege, beef curry, chicken curry, egg plants, etc and etc.. the killer dish was this mackerel warped up in banana leave and steamed with aromatic spices. Its fresh and the flesh falls away at the tender caress of the fork. We had two orders of that.
Besides the 11 dishes, we each had 3 glasses of drinks, and some desserts. Below are some of the desserts we had. Everytime we ordered more, the shop keep keeps looking at us with an amazed look. Basically coz two of us are women who are rather slim and doesn’t look like a heavy eater.
Damn my stomach is full..

There are like a total of 18 different pastries in the pics.

thats it. i’m gng to arab street.
i just went to arab street too. it’s a cool place.
*gasp!* the green green round round wan with the coconut coating … is that the thing that explodes gula melaka juice into your mouth when you bite into it?
Evil Overlord and powerpuff, remember this is Kandahar Street.. repeat after me.. Kan.Da.Har Street.. there is nothing much at Arab Street.. Kandahar St is 2 streets away.
aMuse: yup, those are the ones that burst the sweetness into your mouth..
wow! must drink lots of water. if not sure got constipation. most of the pastries made of glutinous rice. hard to digest.
i want sweet gula melaka goodness in my mouth too!!!!
(actually … juicy goodness of 小笼包 can also :D)
eh, both different things leh.. one is sweetness, the other is tastiness..
the kuah dada also not bad..
ya … both also must have … SOON …

greenish one like spring roll.
OIC … not very like … too much coconut.
I’m going for 小笼包 now! YAY!!! see ya!
mandrake> we know ler.. but the whole area.. kandahar st, bussorah st, bali lane, baghdad st, the north bridge road perimeter, and sometimes even jalan pisang is almost always collectively called arab street. heheh.
the kueh dada not that much coconut for this one.. I think just nice.. not overwhelming.. so where you going for your 小笼包?
EO: heh.. yeah, trust you since you work there for the longest time.
You are going to be on the toilet for days!
You forgot to mention da most impt part of Ramadhan. No sex during the day, no kissing, no swallowing saliva, no wanking, no impure thoughts.
hmm..somehow those pastries don’t turn me on in the least. They look kind of jelly-ish..soapbars …
Going out with women for lunch a lot huh ??? That’s how you gather all the valuable info on maternity wear etc. rite ? Very shrewd….
mandrake, u tempted me lar. stop by at one of the malay stall on the way back from office yesterday to buy some pastries. bought the purple ones, the green ones & some pinks ones. 3 pcs for RM1. i ate 3 pcs, full already. i wonder how can u ol ate so much???

Waaa… like thanks lor. now the inside of my mac is covered with green and brown stains while the inside of my mouth has still yet to taste the gula melaka
hehehe…aMuse, you should tell earlier. i just ate the green green round round gula melaka thing (or the actual name “onde-onde”) for breakfast this morning
Arab Street… I’m craving for shishah all of a sudden… : (
but shishah doesn’t get you high leh..
anyway, that place or the place around it seems to be under renovation..
wah i want to go there too!
I love onde onde. *drool*
from here, I concludes that everyone loves onde onde. Although the best are still that burst in your mouth with sweet gula melaka (brown sugar). There are some where the sugar are still a bit solid…
must go malaysia to get the best ones. gula melaka!!! I like that green roll sorta thing too.
where in melaka leh?
mandrake> there is a new shishah place at arab street…much better than the one we used to go to…better service.
btw my mum makes pretty mean onde ondes..
sd> may I meet your mom? hee hee … or next time when she make may I have some? PUH-LEEEEEASE????
Actually after my post..I called her and asked her to make some for Mandrake..she will be making it on Sunday ( she says she needs to buy sweet potato..apparently if you mix sweet potato into the flour…it tastes better..it think dat’s why hers are different from the shops)..I will be bringing to office on monday for Mandrake.
sd > which one do you usually go to? so i can avoid it…haha!
Idler>we used to go to the one nearer the end of Arab Street…so don’t go there…Evil Overlord says there’s a better one in the middle somewhere..
WAAAA!!!! SO NICE!!! I want also … Mandrake, SIR, how bout sharing some gula melaka goodness with aMuse?
hmm.. must go and check out the other place liao..
SD: yeah, the shop lady told me the sweet potato one nicer, but she didn’t make it that day, so wasted.
err.. aMuse, lets see if there is anything left by monday, k? heh heh..
*sniff* flicks her nose, sticks out her lower lip and makes a face

evie> sure….i’ll post recipe and pics on gastronomy soon… i’ll let mandrake sample first and see if it is really as good as i say…i may be biased in my assesment.
