Things from afar

18 Nov 2004 - Under General By Mandrake

Colleague came back from Jarkata after the long holiday and he bought some stuff over. Stuff like tibits and of course chewing gum. He was asking me beforehand whether its a crime to bring the gums in. I told him no.

For those who doesn’t know it, Singapore doesn’t allow the commercial selling of chewing gums. This was due to too many incidents of public transport getting stuck with gums sticking to the door or the cost of cleaning them up. Anyway, here are some of them..
Gums

Also, finally got the poker chips I wanted. This was from the UK. A friend brought it back for me.

Not to speak out against the Singapore gov’t, but that is the dumbest law I have ever heard!
Anyways, I’m coming to Singapore next week so I’ll holla at you when I get there.

heh, exact same sediments when they passed the law. Well, they say you can save millions of dollars from cleaning up the bubblegums on the floor and the unstuck door on the train. Anyway, I heard Britian is also looking at passing this law as the chewinggum situation is quite bad over there.

But is bringing in the gums for personal consumption allowed? People in my office love chewing gum. Funny how something, when banned, will turn out more popular.

  10. aMuse November 19, 2004 10:04 am

I always thought it was but then again maybe it’s just me giving myself excuses

  11. Mandrake November 19, 2004 10:07 am

yeah, I think so. I think the law says that its illegal to buy and sell gum in Singapore, nothing about personal comsumption. If you want to buy, buy it separately, and not in boxes.

Oh, I forgotten to add that due to the recently signed FTA with the US, we can now buy medically approved chewing gums (nicotine gums) from the pharmacy, thats after you submit your identity card for them to record down. Who knows, you might stick those gums on the train and they want to catch you!

  12. aMuse November 19, 2004 10:19 am

heh … ya. They also sell the non-nicotine variety. Bet my bags will be checked the next time I come back into S’pore from elsewhere.

maybe each gum can be tagged so they can track down WHO exactly stuck that gum on the chair.. oh the dumb govt we have.
