The Sea Inside

13 Jan 2005 - Under General By Mandrake

This is one of the better movies I’ve seen this year. It doesn’t have men that mutate into other things, or girls in super short skirt running around. This Spanish movie, directed by the same person who directed The Others tells the story of this man who had lost feelings from the head down from a swimming incident and is seeking death.

Ramon had been paralysed for more than 26 years and during that period, he had been taken care of by his mother and after that his sister-in-law. The film explore the relationship between him and his family, from the elder brother who opposed his decision to seek death, his nephew’s help in running his errands and his sister-in-law’s selflessness effort in taking care of him.

He wanted to seek death the legal way and had a lawyer, Julia, who has a degenerative diease helping him out. When his plight was broadcast on national tv, a single mom befriended him and found solice in his presence. Its a rather sad movie, judging from the sobbing from my two female movie partners but overall, its a very watchable movie. The dialog is witty especially when Ramon poke fun at his own disablity.

Ramon: Julia, I can’t sleep!
Julia: Why?
Ramon: I have an itch at my leg and I can’t scratch it!

Go watch it, at least its much better than this.

Trailer is here.

The Sea Inside

On the way back, my friend and me were discussing what we would do in his shoes. We came to the conclusion that unless we are a burden (financially or otherwise), we won’t want to see death. No doubt we are paralyse from the head down and has no feelings whatsoever, but we still have our head. We want to still be able to read books, write stories or just listen to music. No point ending life just there and then.. but as I said, we did agree that if life like this is a burden to other people, I rather go away. So in order to not burden people, better buy more insurance now.. heh..

How about you?

I almost watched this show yesterday, but I’m too tired to do so. The theme of the story is very provoking I think.
