Earthquake!

29 Mar 2005 - Under General By Mandrake

I@n said in my comment my applicances were trying to warn me about the tsunami that hits Indonesia again early this morning. I doubt so.

The news today reported that people around the east and north area felt some tremours from the earth quake. Even some in the central and southern area of Singapore. The earthquake happens around several hundred kilometers almost southwestern of the island of Singapore. At least thats what the map showed on the tv this morning. Strange thing is that no one in the west felt anything even though its technically nearer to us. I stayed in the west and through out the last few earthquakes, we never felt anything in the west. Can someone who might be studying geoglogy tell me why?

Is the west side of Singapore more stable than the east? My area is supposed to be near granite while the east side and northern side were made of reclaim land.. hmm..

Anyway, Singapore is sort of protected from the tsunami (if any) coz of the big island of Java and Sumatra in the west and south and Broneo in the east. The volcanic fire belt is beyond this islands, so for one to strike, it must be between Singapore and these islands.

Condolances to the 2000+ people who died in the island near to the epic center of this current earthquake though.

I live near the west too, but I didn’t feel anything. My colleague’s sis who lives in Holland V felt the tremors though.

I have been in the West for almost all my life and we are lucky people, so far.

The only complaint (sigh…singaporean) , is the smell of fertilizers from the farms at Lim Chu Kang area… but that is like countryside living eh…

Sad to hear about the loss of lives from yesterday’s quaker though.

my place is in the south.. the southernmost you can get.

i didn’t feel any tremors.. but my friend’s office in the appartments of Internationl Plaza saw the swimming pool water splashing all over the place.

i was asleep when it happened. but apparently if you’re lying and sitting down, you will feel very little of the tremmors as compared to when you’re standing… so perhaps thats why…

but yes… it would have been interesting to feel the earth move under my feet!

I stay in Bt Panjang, and I felt slight tremours. Not large enough to scare me, but enough to shake my computer table, and I felt my chair sway.

But then, I have been in Taiwan and experienced real earthquakes twice, so maybe I have seen worse.

But no one in my block gathered downstairs when I looked, ,so I guess many were fast asleep.
