A little boy

7 Jun 2005 - Under General By Mandrake

It was 12 midnight, I just took the last bus from town and was walking towards my house.

Along the way, a little boy stood in my path. As I walked past him, he said.

“Hello uncle, can you give me $1.20 to buy some food?”

I asked him, “You want to buy food ah?”

“Yes, can you give me two dol… $1.20 to buy food?”

So I said, “Okay, come with me, I bring you to the coffeeshop there and buy you some food.”

At this point, the boy just walked off cause he can’t get any cash. I took walked off since I doubt he really want to buy any food.

What would you have done then?

Same, offer to buy him food. If he doesnt want, its not because i dont wanna help.

  2. Jaschocolate June 7, 2005 2:18 am

If he is cute, i will probably give him the $1.20. I can spare the money… if too much, then just ignore him

these kind of things happen all the time in London..a few pences here n there..think they just want the money to buy drugs n cig……all i do is pretend not to understand english @ all and just walk off.

  4. echa June 7, 2005 7:17 am

he probably only wanted the money. I meant, he just gave you a reason that he needed money for food

similar situation happen to me before. it was abt 10 pm and i just returned from work. once i alight the bus stop, a boy came up to me asking for $10. he said he needs to go home. i asked how come he still outside so late n on a school nite somemore. he couldn’t give me a direct answer. in the end, i hail a cab n give the taxi driver $5 to send the boy home.

Give him a goal kick to the butt and send him flying to his home.

Just a reader passing by. Seems like these incidents are mushrooming of late. Honestly, I’d have waved them off. I could not even think of “bringing them for food”. Scold me for being heartless but I can’t imagine myself bringing a stranger for food. I’d be scared to hell even if he/she is a kid.

  13. Jayaxe June 7, 2005 10:00 pm

What you did wasn’t wrong, but could it be that the kid was afraid to follow a stranger who might just do anything to him? So maybe that’s why he chose to run off instead. I don’t know, just a thought.

Wouldn’t give money. Buying food is what I would do.

    Hunt down the youngling!

  16. barffie June 7, 2005 11:45 pm

They might have been taught to do such things. They wouldn’t know, you know?
I would bring him buy food also, not give him the cash outright. Maybe can dig out some info, try to counsel… Wait the kid grow up thinking begging is good. Being cheapo and wanna con friends out of some makan is something, but being a con man out of people’s money is something else altogether!

*pats your back* I think you did the right thing. The boy trying to trick ya. Probabl;y learnt that phrase from some old bum.

As I was walking away from the boy who ignored my offer for food, a policeman walked pass. I had a mind to ask him to check out the boy, but then the paper work puts me off.. heh

anyway, if I see the boy around again, I probably go to the police who has a building a stone throw away. This can’t go on in the long run.

    you never nag at him?

basket. I thought you damn clever at nagging one.

u know wat….i was out with my friends last night at a kopitiam…we kena one old lady asking for $. All of us didn’t know wat to do or wat to say. She was speaking in cantonese with both hands reaching out, and she was eyeing the wallets on the table….gosh….it seems like an eternity while nobody did anything.

The old lady seemed irritated that nobody at our table gave, as she had easy pickings from the other tables. *grumble*

I was comtemplating whether to give or not….one side i feel bad, on the other hand…it’s bad to give too. :|

But it’s quite sad that people actually have to resort to this. feed a hungry man, if not u’re killing him no? but i’ll prob offer to buy him food instead of giving him d $ too.

  24. imustendure June 8, 2005 4:38 pm

I dont think its about the amount of money the kid is looking for.. But if give already, pests like this will only feel more encouraged or daring to keep asking.

U encountered one guy (bout late 20s) at a coffeeshop calling my ‘ eh how are you long time no see, hows things…blah blah…’ then my kopi came and he ordered another drink, his came and he waited for me to pay for both our drinks man….i paid for his drink as well (i was still figuring out who he is ….) my mee came and he ordered another one from the seller, then i asked him who he is and how we knew each other, things like that. He then embarrassingly asked my to treat him to the food and drink. what can i say. i told him off, saying that if he had asked me properly in the first place, i would have considered giving him a treat, but he try to pose as some fren of mine to get me to buy him lunch, wah lau. sometimes i wonder…he is a fit young man of late 20s cant he find a job or something…whats the world coming to.
