The Island and me

31 Jul 2005 - Under General By Mandrake

This post might have spoilers about the movie “The Island”. Don’t read if you have any intention to watch it.

I watched “The Island” over the week and I think that what was mentioned in the movie is not totally impossible. With the progress that bioscience is going these days, whose to say that we can’t do what was done in the movie?

One thing that strikes me is the storyline. I read something like this in a Chinese novel about 10 years ago. The author of this Chinese novel is called Ni Kuang and he has written quite a number of books on sci fi and martial arts. One of the main characters in his scifi series is called “Wei Shi Li”, or The legend of Weslie.

In one of his books that was written in the late 1960s, he talks about cloning the principle character and then breed them at a very fast speed to harvest their organs. Well, since this is a copy of the principle character, the body will hardly rejects the implanted organs right?

Anyway, I wonder if Michael Bay and writers had “adapted” their story from him or does Ni Kuang knows about this storyline. I mean this from an author who wrote about harvesting organs from clones more than 40 years before our scientists actually clone a sheep.

If your Mandarin is alright and you enjoy Scifi books, go pick up one of his books. Its a good read. I think I read thru almost all his writing (about 90 odd then).

Thought ‘The Island’ ought to have been a not-so-low-profile movie. Never read Ni Kuang’s books but caught Wei Si Li on TV twice. Don’t remember coming across a similar story though.

    you read ni kuang too?

i used to read. but i became a bigger fan of his sis 亦舒 but don’t thinkan author guys read lah.

think i kinda stopped reading ni kuang coz sometimes it gets a little boring. wei si li talks too much lah. too much talk, not enough action. and somemore the action damn hyperbolic lah. machum like he’s superman. and wei si li is damn egoistic! can get irritating.

but really, some of them are quite good. it’s amazing how ni kuang can have such out of the world ideas. but sometimes, his endings are so abrupt that i feel quite cheated.
