Breakfast of champions

26 Aug 2005 - Under General By Mandrake

I overslept on the bus on the way to work today. I noticed that when people overslept on the bus, the moment they woke up, they will look around to see where they are. One type of people will quickly press the bell and try to squeeze his way to the exit, ignoring everyone. Another type would probably just see where they are and then decide whether its right to get down. I belong to the later type. Its easier to think where you are and then think of a way to get back. Usually there is a better route than to go across the road and take the other bus back.

I decided to stop at Chinatown today after oversleeping and visit the hawker center there. There are alot of stalls there but not all open. In fact, I think I never seen some of them open before, even though they do look used daily.

I stumbled upon this stall selling glutinous rice. It has the sign “Famous Chinatown Glutinous Rice” displayed on the stall front. Normally I would just give it a glance, since anyone can put that kind of sign up. However, there was a small queue of elderly folks buying the food so I was curious and I went for a look. They look good and I bought a plate at $1.

The rice was light and fluffy, and not very oily. Its mixed in with some boiled peanuts to give a better texture. In fact, just about done right. It was sprinkled with fried chopped garlic and shallots to give it a even nicer taste. Overall, it wasn’t salty and just nice for my taste. Furthermore, the glutinous rice comes with freeflow of chinese tea.

I can’t remember the stall number, but the table I sat is table 33, and its just in front of the stall.
