Commonwealth Chicken Wings
After growing up in the Tiong Bahru area mentioned in the previous post, I moved to the Commonwealth area when I was about 7. I stayed there close to 7 years and I still agree that Commonwealth is one of the best areas around. My flat was located on one of the top floors for one of the tallest flats around, located on top of a hill. As its a corner unit, there isn’t any other flats blocking our view or our wind.
The wind can blow really really cold at night, we don’t need an aircon. The natural wind is enough. On a good day, I can see really really far as the flat is really tall. I think although its standing at a height of only 16 stories, if you factor in the hill, you probably get 26 stories in all.
Anyway, J saw a food program on tv last wednesday and they were showing off the chicken wings available at market there. Well, I had tried that wings before and I find it so so. The one at Ice Cold Beer is much better. Anyway, on her whim, we went for a look see after work on sat. Woh, at 6.30pm, there were already 30 odd people in the queue. Guess who ended up queuing for it.
While queuing for the food, I overheard the coffeeshop auntie saying:”Usually not much queue one, after they ‘advertise’ on that tv show last week, then everyday got this kind of queue.”, ah, the power of TV manifest itself again.
After queueing for about 30 mins, its finally our turn and we ordered the “must have” wings, some vege, taiwan sausages, fried beancurds and of course some fried bee hood.
Well, the wings is best served hot, after that, its pretty much not as nice. I still find the overall food so so, nothing much to be fancy about, definitely not worth to queue for 30 mins about. We were there for about 2 hours (waiting for someone) and during that entire 2 hours, the queue maintained itself at between 20 to 30 people. Not a bad publicity eh?
Anyway, if you have the time, visit the nearby hawker center. Its the first one that I’ve seen that have an escalator installed. I think its for the older folks to get around since this is a pretty old neighbourhood. I can’t recommend much for the food as I haven’t tried any. But if you want some hot green/red bean desserts, go for the shop right in front, facing the open air area. That shop has been around for a while and they do serve pretty decent desserts.
By the power of Google Earth and StreetDirectory.com, I will give you the location as seen from the sky! Anyway, its at Blk 117, Commonwealth Crescent.
