“Home cooked”
One thing I like about Malaysia when it comes to food is the fact that you can actually open a shop selling food right outside/inside your house. In Singapore, you can’t really do that and I think the requirement to get a license is quite strict. So far, I’ve only see a few.
Sometimes, these kind of stalls has their hygiene problem. You never know where the food had been before or after they are cooked, but what the heck, its the same for a normal food stall anyway.
There is this place called Hillside Western Food in Penang opened by a Caucasian lady called Stella. Its right across from the famous Uncle Burger and Esso Station.
She had set up a stove, fridge and some tables and chairs right in her house porch. The garden has lots of herbs, some that I thought its not possible to be grown in our climate. I saw basil, thyme and probably sage. I thought I saw rosemary but I am not sure.
Anyway, the food is not bad. She is quite famous for her Roast Pork Ribs. At first I thought it would be something like BBQ Ribs or something, but turns out that its not that. Its more of like a lightly roasted side of pork ribs. The stock that the gravy is made of is fantastic. You can taste the essense of the chicken stock that its made from.
I had the black pepper lamb chop. I like the fact that she didn’t save on the amount of pepper in the dish. The amount of pepper suits the lamb chop really well although I find it a bit on the salty side. But its definitely much better than some other lamb chops that I had tried.
