Chiang Mai

30 Jul 2006 - Under General By Mandrake

My company organized a trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand over the last few days. Its more or less an all expensed paid trip there. We booked the tickets a while back so its quite cheap. Naturally, its by TigerAir.

Its my first time there so I wasn’t expecting much. When I was on my way to the hotel from the airport, it stuck me that most of Chiang Mai is a bit like Singapore in the early 70s. With houses along the street made of zinc and wood. Its quite an interesting sight.

However, with globalism, one can always find a Starbuck or the golden arch.

The funny thing was that the clown in the Mcdonald’s was doing the Thai greeting with its palm facing one another.

Over the course of the next few days, we induldge in shopping, eating and alcoholism. Beers are so cheap there that its a sin to drink water. I mean a pint of Erdinger is SGD5. Their local beer is around 30Baht, which is around SGD1.20.

Since food and most drinks are on the company bill, we ate quite a lot during dinner. More on that later.

Besides the above activities, we also did ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) rides up a hill which is around 1400m. Its quite exciting as my friend drove the vehicle down a 20 degree drop. Luckily no one was seriously hurt.

On the last day, we went for a cooking class from Thai Cookery School featuring a quite famous chef from Thailand who has his own cooking show on Discovery Channel Food and Living. More on this later.

All in all, it was quite good from the good food and other things.
