Chiang Mai Part 4

31 Jul 2006 - Under Food, General By Mandrake

We only stayed in Chiang Mai for 2 nights. However, for both nights, the dinner was fabulous.

On the first night, we went to the Good View Bar and Pub which is located near the Ping River. They served both Thai and Western food and the prices are quite affordable. Furthermore, there is a live band who are very good in what they do. In fact, they are so much better than what you would called the Singapore Idols over here.

The amount of food is staggering, but when the bill came, its less than SGD20 per person and that includes alcohol as well. One of the dish is called STIR FRIED MINCED BEEF IN LARB CURRY POWDER. When I first tasted it, its so so, a bit spicy, but then the larb curry powder start to work itself into my tongue. 5 mins later, I was downing beer just to get rid of that spiciness. Its one of the most powerful curry I’ve ever tried.

The second night, we went to the River Ping Palace. The website is a bit slow right now and it doesn’t do justice to the place. Its operated by a lady who used to be a corporate lawyer in Singapore. The place has a very nice charming feel to it. Clay potteries with flowers floating on top welcome you as you step thru the big wooden gate. The dinner table was nicely laid out and the lighting adds on to the feel.

We were served with about 8 dishes but the timing was really good. Right before we finished the last morsel of food on our plate, the new dish would be served.

One of my fav would be the tempura kang kong with thai curry. Its the first time I’ve seen kang kong being cooked this way, and its really good. The spiciness of the curry accompanied it really well. By dessert time, we were all full. Dessert itself consisted of mango cheesecakes (which by my definition is heaven), small steamed coconut-milk cakes and one full plate of frest fruits. I was too busy to take pics.
