No more road tax

21 Nov 2007 - Under General By Mandrake

I don’t own a car in Singapore. Its just not cost effective here in Singapore if you only drive it to work and back.

I was in a cab today back from lunch and the uncle told me not to buy cars in the next few years. Reason being that I will sell it in that time coz of certain actions by LTA.

The simple reason is that his friends in LTA said they might abolish road tax in Singapore in the next 3-4 years time. Now, you will say, “but thats good news what?”.

Well, they will always find a way to charge you if you want to drive, so the easiest way is of course the only thing that every vehicle in Singapore has, the IU unit.

Basically he said that you will be charged based on the usage of the road. So if you drive more, you pay more. I suspect that there will be a cap to the amount.

I think this is a good idea. You pay for what you use. If you don’t use, then you don’t get charge. You just pay for the parking, COE, insurance while the car sits at home.

He moves on to say that no one can cheat anymore, not that I know of any ways to cheat on road tax now.
