Divx DVD player

13 Jul 2008 - Under Tech Talk By Mandrake

I want to watch some of my videos on the tv instead of the computer. Unfortunately, these videos only plays on the computer and if I want to watch on the TV, I had to burn it to a DVD or CDROM, or so I thought.

I was exploring several options including using the XBOX 360 as a media extender, modify the XBOX (first gen) into a media center machine or buying a DVD player that can accept USB input.

A few weeks ago, I read in hardwarezone that you can actually copy the video to a USB driver and plug it into some of the newer DVD players and it can play from there.

I thought it would be cool to try that instead of fiddling with the XBOXs. I assume the new DVD player would cost around $150 onwards.

Just now I went down to Mustafa to take a look. We need to buy some extra lights for the cupboards anyway. I was surprised at the price DVD players have nowadays. It starts from around $55 to $200 for those high ends models.

The particular function (enable playback of USB devices) comes with some basic low end models. Prices start from $55 onwards. I chose a AKAI ADV-6002 white and compact DVD player. It tested out alright in the shop and the price is only $63.

When I came home, I set it up immediately and plugged in my external harddisk. The guy told me that this is possible. Unfortunately, either my harddisk is too big or its not compatible, the DVD player shows a loading message even after 3 mins.

I took it out and insert a 2GB thumbdrive with some shows and loh and behold, it was able to load up the content. I shall try the external harddisk again. Now I can watch those content on the big screen, or the small screen in the room.

Update: I just tried the external harddisk again. This time it loads properly. I think you need to turn the player off and on again after plugging in the harddisk. whoppie
