Divx DVD Player Part 2

14 Jul 2008 - Under Tech Talk By Mandrake

So I tried the Akai Divx DVD player last night. It did ran fine but here is what went wrong.

1) Out of 10 times I plugged my thumbdrive or external harddisk in, it only read 3 times. Else it will just so call reboot and goes to the main menu and try to read again.

2) The OS does not support long file names. So if you file is named “Cowboy Caleb Does Blackzilla”, it will show up as “Cowbow~1″. This will in turn cause you to have problem if you have files like “Cowboy Caleb Does Blackzilla Again!”. You will actually see it as “Cowboy~2″ or something like that.

I have no problem with the short name but i can’t stand the long time it tried to load up my storage and doesn’t show anything at all.

This evening, I braved the Serangoon crowd and went down to Mustafa to get it checked out. Their demo set also can’t play my storages. I tested about 5 other systems and most of them have the same problem. In the end, the LG DV398H managed to play it without any problem. The loading time was about 10-30secs as I had a big storage (about 160GB). My 2GB thumbdrive was fast though, it was detected within a few seconds.

The LG player cost $162, which is still within my budget. Its fully HD compliance so it should work well with a good LCD TV in future. One of the other functions is the karaoke function, it can let you connect two mic and you can sing your heart out.

The LG also has no problem with long file names, in fact it can read very long file names so my name replacement exercise last night was in vain.

Finally, I think its not the Akai model that is having that much of a problem as it can play the promoter’s thumbdrive with no problem. However, I rather play it safe and get one that can really play my videos.

One thing I must say is that the promoters at Mustafa are really good. They were patient with me for testing out so many models just to make sure it worked. In the end, I left Mustafa a very satisfied customer.
